Let’s talk about infrastructure – Provide your input on our Integrated Master Plan

Infrastructure is the backbone of our community, providing essential systems that keep the region running smoothly. Every day, we deliver safe, high-quality drinking water to homes and businesses, clean and treat wastewater to protect the environment, and build and maintain roads and bridges to help you get safely where you need to go.

Our community is growing — and it’s growing fast. The Province has set some ambitious targets to help accommodate growth, starting with a target to build 1.5 million homes across Ontario by 2031. A lot of that work is happening right here in Halton, with our local municipalities pledging to deliver a combined 92,500 housing units. By 2051, we expect to have at least 1.1 million people living here and 500,000 jobs across the region.

To support this growth, we’ll need strong, reliable water, wastewater, and transportation systems that can continue delivering the high-quality services we all depend on every day.

That’s why we’re developing an Integrated Master Plan — a long-term strategy that will help us build smarter, invest wisely, and maintain the essential infrastructure that makes our region the best.

What is the Integrated Master Plan?

Halton Region’s Integrated Master Plan (IMP) is our roadmap for managing and expanding our core infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing community.

The IMP will:

Guide the management and development of the Region's water, wastewater and transportation systems (including active transportation);

maximize capacity, system flexibility and extend the life expectancy of Regional water, wastewater and transportation infrastructure; and

outline the strategies for maintaining and improving these critical systems to ensure we meet the needs of the community now and in the future.

It focuses on three key areas:

Water
focused on the delivery of safe, clean drinking water to homes and businesses within the urban areas.

Wastewater
addresses the collection and treatment of sewage from the urban areas before returning the treated water safely to the environment.

Transportation
focuses on a Regional transportation network for transit users, active transportation (e.g., pedestrians and cyclists), cars and trucks that accommodates all users and all abilities.

Why your feedback matters

This is the second virtual Public Information Centre (PIC) that we’ve hosted to get resident and business feedback. From November 27, 2023 to January 2, 2024 we hosted our first PIC to help explain the Master Plan process, identify opportunities and to invite public feedback. Comments that we received during the first session were invaluable and were taken into consideration as our team moved into the next phase of the Master Plan Study.

Now we’re back with our preliminary strategies for water, wastewater and transportation and we need your input! It’s important to keep in mind that we’re not planning for growth itself — we’re planning the infrastructure that supports that growth. We want to make sure we’re investing in the right projects, in the right places, at the right time. So share your feedback today!

Visit our Virtual PIC webpage to learn about the IMP and our study findings so far.

Visit the IMP project page to find additional background info or to download copies of notices and reports.

Once you’ve reviewed the materials, you can take our survey to share your ideas and feedback!

If you want to be added to the study mailing list or if you require information in alternate format you can also email our project team at imp@halton.ca

Let’s build a stronger future together

Our incredible Public Works team has put so much work into developing this plan — and with your help, we can make sure we’re building the infrastructure we need in the decades to come.

So let’s talk about infrastructure. If we do this together, we can build a smarter, stronger Region where residents and businesses can live, grow, and thrive.
