Regional Chair Gary Carr: New Circular Economy Fund in 2026

We are committed to supporting actions that help divert waste from our landfill site in Halton. It is better for us, better for you, and creates a sustainable future.

In our Solid Waste Management Strategy, we have set a goal to increase our waste diversion rate by up to 65% and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 13,020 tonnes per year.

A circular economy is one way we will work towards this goal. A “circular or shared economy” is all about re-using and up-cycling materials to keep them in use for as long as possible. You are part of the circular economy when you donate clothing, furniture, or household items to a reuse store, repurpose an item for another use, or even borrow a book from a neighbourhood lending library. By sharing, repairing, and reusing, you help extend the lifecycle of products, conserve resources, and reduce waste.

New in 2026: Halton Community Circular Economy Fund

The creation of the Community Circular Economy Fund will support the efforts of community organizations in Halton with circular and sharing economy projects and programs. Starting in 2026, non-profits, community groups and organizations will be able to apply for funding from $2,500 up to $55,000 per year to support their circular economy initiatives. More details will be available later this year. This is great news for our community and the environment.

I want to thank our Waste Management team. They plan for our future with sustainability in mind and help residents access the tools they need to reduce waste. Thank you for helping people live, grow and thrive in Halton!
