Thanks to you, Halton diverted over 58% of its waste in 2024!
Halton Region is proud to share that in 2024, our community diverted over 58% of residential waste from landfill thanks to the continued efforts and commitment of our residents.
Together, we successfully diverted 136,570 tonnes of waste through our comprehensive waste management programs. Only 71,114 tonnes of garbage were landfilled at the Halton Waste Management Site, demonstrating the effectiveness of our collective actions in reducing environmental impact.

Here’s how Halton residents contributed to waste diversion last year:
- blue box: 47,767 tonnes
- green gart: 33,847 tonnes
- yard waste: 28,655 tonnes
- household hazardous waste: 747 tonnes
- electronic waste: 378 tonnes

A strategic approach to waste diversion
Halton Region’s success is built on a three-pronged strategy:
- advocacy
- programs and services
- community outreach and education
Our Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee plays a vital role in promoting the 3Rs—reduce, reuse, recycle—and supporting initiatives that minimize landfill use.
Advocacy that drives progress
Halton Region, in partnership with local municipalities, advocated for updates to Provincial legislation that strengthen industry accountability for recycling and waste disposal.
These changes align with the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016, and include:
- Blue Box Regulation (O. Reg. 391/21)
- Hazardous and Special Products Regulation (O. Reg. 449/21)
- Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulation (O. Reg. 522/20)
- Tires Regulation (O. Reg. 225/18)
- Batteries Regulation (O. Reg. 30/20)
Supporting community awareness and innovation
In 2024, the Halton Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee helped raise awareness about key updates to our waste collection programs, including:
- future service levels under the next collection contract
- implementation of Ontario Regulation 391/21: Blue Box
- Halton’s Solid Waste Management Strategy
- Wheeled Cart Demonstration Project
- expanded rural collection services in Halton Hills
- construction of the next landfill cell at the Halton Waste Management Site
Established in 1992 as a Condition of Approval for the HWMS, the Committee includes representatives from all four Halton municipalities and continues to be a cornerstone of our waste management efforts.
