Quick facts

Key messages for healthcare providers

  • To better prioritize high-impact work that meets local needs, reduce duplication of services, manage budget constraints and prepare for updates to the Ontario Public Health Standards, Public Health’s Stop Smoking Clinic services closed in December 2025.
  • Consider Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), motivational interviewing and prescription medications such as varenicline and bupropion (covered by Ontario Drug Benefit for those that qualify) to support patients’ attempts to quit tobacco.
  • Comprehensive list of community resources to support patients is available on Halton - Substance Misuse – Alcohol, Tobacco, Vaping, Cannabis and Opioids Information for Physicians
