Pharmacist assessments for Influenza A antiviral prophylaxis recommendations for staff at outbreak-affected facilities

Quick facts

  • Influenza activity across Halton has been elevated this season, resulting in a significant increase in influenza-related outbreaks in congregate settings.
  • To facilitate timely access to antiviral prophylaxis, Halton Region Public Health is providing facilities in outbreak with letters that staff may present to pharmacists. These letters confirm that Halton has directed the individual to be assessed for influenza prophylaxis as part of outbreak management.
  • The purpose of these letters is to document the individual’s eligibility and assist pharmacists in assessing, prescribing and dispensing antiviral medication.

Key messages for healthcare providers

  • Due to the potential vaccine mismatch this season, it is recommended that antivirals are offered to all staff, including those who have been vaccinated, during outbreaks of influenza A, until the typing is known. If it is not an H3 strain, the antivirals for vaccinated staff can be discontinued.
  • Therapeutic assessments related to oseltamivir prescriptions are publicly funded for eligible individuals with a valid OHIP card or ODB number. Dispensing fees are also covered for ODB recipients using the appropriate Limited Use Codes.
  • For more information regarding a pharmacist’s authority to prescribe antiviral treatments under the Pharmacy Act, 1991 and eligibility to submit claims for payment claims, please refer to the Ministry of Health Executive Officer Notice: Prescribing Oral Antiviral Treatments for Respiratory Viruses in Ontario Pharmacies Effective January 17, 2025 (external PDF).
