Halton Highlights

The loss of our children is a pain felt by all Canadians. This is the moment to stand together. Let this tragedy be a light that guides us to a better path. We will never gorget. I don't have to know you to love you.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Regional staff gathered today to raise the Survivors’ Flag (external link) in honour of the thousands of Indigenous children who were taken from their families and placed in Residential Schools, many of whom never returned home. We remember the Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities who continue to carry this painful legacy.

Prior to its formal recognition as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30 was recognized as Orange Shirt Day. The day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story (YouTube video), in which she shares how the orange shirt she had picked out for her first day of school was taken from her upon arrival to St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School.

At Halton Region, we remain committed to building respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, Communities, and First Nations, and advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.

Halton Region is situated on the Treaty Lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the Traditional Territory of the Haudenosaunee , Huron-Wendat, and Anishinabek Peoples.

In 2022, Halton Region and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation signed a Relationship Agreement (YouTube video), marking a significant step in building a respectful and collaborative partnership. Through this agreement, we continue to collaborate towards the shared goals outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (external link).

This journey is ongoing.

It requires humility, honesty, and a willingness to listen and learn.

Everyone is encouraged to reflect, learn, and take meaningful action toward reconciliation. Thank you to our Indigenous Relations team at Halton Region, who provide us with guidance and support, not just today, but throughout the year.
