Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots campaign to educate people on the Residential School system and promote the message that “Every Child Matters."

About the Chair

About Regional Chair Gary Carr

Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr has served the Halton community for over 34 years:

  • Chair Carr served as a Member of Provincial Parliament for Oakville South from 1990-2003 and was appointed Speaker of the Ontario Legislature on October 20, 1999 (serving in this role from 2000-2003).
  • He also served a Member of Parliament for Halton from 2004-2006.
  • Chair Carr was elected Halton Regional Chair on November 13, 2006 and has proudly served his community in this position for over 18 years.

Before entering public service, Chair Carr was a businessman and sales manager in the transportation industry. While serving in political office, he received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Athabasca University (2002). He earlier received a certificate in Business Administration from Ryerson University.

As a young man, Regional Chair Carr played professional hockey for 6 years. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins, and played 4 years in their farm system in the International and American Hockey Leagues. Chair Carr then signed as a free agent with the Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche), where he played 2 more years in the American Hockey League. In 1975, he was a member of the Memorial Cup champion Toronto Marlboros.
