Join keynote speaker Dr. Hassan Mir, Chair of The Ottawa Model of Smoking Cessation and Halton Region Public Health to learn about:
Current trends in nicotine use (vaping and smoking) among youth and adults,
Opportunistic approaches for screening and assessment among patients who vape and smoke nicotine, especially youth and young adults, and
Potential nicotine cessation interventions for use in primary care.
Tobacco use costs Ontario an estimated $4.18 billion in healthcare costs, lost productivity, criminal justice and other costs each year. With the changing face of nicotine appealing to youth and causing addiction earlier, the role of primary care is more important than ever.

Key messages for healthcare providers
To better prioritize high-impact work that meets local needs, reduce duplication of services, manage budget constraints and prepare for updates to the Ontario Public Health Standards, Public Health’s Stop Smoking Clinic services closed in December 2025.
Consider Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), motivational interviewing and prescription medications such as Varenicline and Bupropion (covered by Ontario Drub Benefit for those that qualify) to support patients’ attempts to quit tobacco.
