In May, we have another opportunity to celebrate some of our incredible Halton staff through national recognition weeks! Whether on the front line or working behind the scenes, our nurses, public works staff and paramedic services team provide critical services and infrastructure that support our community each and every day. These individuals have also ensured essential programs remained available throughout the pandemic, and I am proud to highlight these teams below.
National Nursing Week
May 9 to 15 is National Nursing Week, an annual celebration of the history, work and achievements of nurses across Canada. Nurses in Halton help keep residents healthy by providing a wide range of supports to our community. During the pandemic, nurses working for Halton Region have been integral to case and contact management, administering COVID-19 vaccines and providing public health information and guidance. They have also continued to care for residents living in Regional long-term care homes, coordinate and administer school-based immunizations to youth and deliver essential programs for young families. Our nurses make enormous daily contributions to resident well-being in Halton, and I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts and positive impact.

National Public Works Week
National Public Works Week is May 15 to 21, recognizing an enormous range of contributions by staff who provide critical services in waste management, roads and water and wastewater treatment, as well as its related infrastructure. Halton’s own Public Works team delivers effective waste management programs and oversees the construction and maintenance of Regional roads to help you travel from home to work, retail and play. They also provide access to safe, high-quality drinking water and treat wastewater before safely returning it to the environment. I would like to thank everyone working in Public Works at Halton for supporting our overall quality of life and helping us keep pace with growth.

National Paramedic Services Week
It is National Paramedic Services Week from May 22 to 28! This week celebrates the team of remarkable individuals who provide emergency care and community-based medical care when residents need it most. Our paramedics respond to more than 50,000 calls each year – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During the pandemic, they have provided additional support to our community by testing vulnerable residents (via mobile testing) and vaccinating individuals who were unable to attend a community clinic. Halton’s Paramedic Services team also oversees the logistics of this life-saving care and delivers other programs to educate our community and help keep us all safe. I would like to thank them for their efforts to protect resident health and respond to emergencies in our community.
