Regional Chair Gary Carr: Tips to reduce your holiday waste

All actions – big or small – can make a difference when it comes to protecting our natural environment. By participating in the Region’s waste diversion programs, such as Blue Box, Green Cart and Yard Waste collection, we can limit our holiday waste and reduce our household waste all year long.

Here are a few simple tips to reduce your waste this season:

Repurpose household materials to wrap gifts, such as newspaper, brown packing paper, fabric or cookie tins.

Reuse wrapping paper, gift bags and bows.

Bring a reusable bag when doing your holiday shopping.

blue box and green cart

Use our weekly Blue Box and Green Cart programs to help recyclables become new products and organics become renewable energy and fertilizer!

Use tissue paper free of tape and glitter, which can be composted in the Green Cart.

Shop for fresh local holiday treats using our Simply Local map to avoid products packaged in single-use plastics.

Donate items in good condition like clothing, toys and books to the Reuse Depot, located at the Halton Waste Management Site, to support local charities.

Waste Collection Guide and Calendar

In the coming weeks, the 2023 Halton Region Waste Collection Guide and Calendar will be arriving in mailboxes! With your next calendar on its way, I would also like to share that to reduce the amount of paper we use, we will be moving to a digital-based calendar in 2024. We will continue to offer our suite of waste tools online, and while you will no longer receive a Waste Collection Guide and Calendar in the mail after this year, printed copies of the yearly collection schedule will remain available by request. Many of you are already using our digital services, and if you are not using them yet I encourage you to connect with us to learn more.

Thank you for helping to minimize our community waste! Your efforts contribute to a more sustainable future. By doing our part to protect the natural environment this holiday season and all throughout the year, we can help keep Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
