Regional Chair Gary Carr: Waste tips and information as we head into spring

Halton’s waste management programs and services make managing your household waste an easy and convenient part of your daily routine. In the coming weeks, our seasonal programs—such as yard waste collection and compost giveaways—will resume to help you sort and properly dispose of household materials. I would like to share some important reminders and waste tips as we head into the spring!

Yard waste collection resuming this April

Starting the week of April 4, yard waste collection will occur every other week on the same day as garbage in urban areas. Please use a paper yard waste bag or rigid container with a yellow yard waste sticker. As a reminder, grass clippings, sod and dirt do not go in your yard waste, and can be dropped off at the Halton Waste Management Site (user fees apply).

Compost giveaway

After a hiatus due to COVID-19, we will host a compost giveaway event later this spring at the Halton Waste Management Site. Remember to bring your own shovels and containers to collect high-quality compost for your garden, created from yard waste material collected in our community. Check our Waste Events and Resources page and Halton’s social media channels (Twitter (external link), Facebook (external link), Instagram (external link) for updates!

Help prevent wind-blown litter

We can all help keep our community clean and prevent materials from blowing away on windy days. On collection day, consider:

  • putting materials at the curb by 7 a.m., not the night before;
  • using a clear plastic bag for recyclables and not overfilling Blue Boxes;
  • placing heavier recyclables on top of loose items; and
  • ensuring all Green Cart materials are placed in a paper or Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified bag that is tied or sealed, with the lid latch secured.
