Waste Collection for Apartment and Condominium Buildings

 

Learn about apartment and condominium recycling and waste disposal requirements for residents, owners, superintendents and developers.

Information for Residents

Halton Region is committed to providing Halton residents living in apartments or condominiums with the resources to reduce their household waste and contribute to protecting the natural environment.

  • All apartments and condominiums have Blue Carts available for recycling.
  • Halton Region will notify all residents, superintendents, property owners and/or condo board members when the Green Cart program will start in your building. Tools necessary to participate in the program will be provided.
  • To order Blue Bags, or Kitchen Catchers (for Green Cart program), contact your property owner, manager, or superintendent.

Information for Superintendents, Property Managers & Owners

  • Blue Carts are for recycling, Green Carts are for food waste
  • Blue Cart size is 360 litres, Green Cart size is 360 litres or 120 litres
  • Blue and Green carts must be accessible for collection by 7 a.m. on collection day
  • Wash carts frequently. Upon request, Halton Region can provide contact information for approved professional cleaning services
  • Help residents sort their waste by placing acceptable materials labels and/or posters on or above Carts. If carts are heavily contaminated with the wrong materials, they will not be collected
  • Request Waste Diversion guides for your residents (PDF file) to help with using waste programs
  • Line Green Carts with paper bag or Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified bag (PDF file). Contact Halton Region for a list of compostable bag suppliers

  • To book a resident information workshop on waste programs in your building, contact 311

Information for developers

The purpose of the Development Design Guidelines for Source Separation of Solid Waste is to:

  • Clarify the requirements for receiving waste collection services from Halton Region
  • Outline and illustrate the criteria used to review development applications with respect to the management and storage of solid waste on the site
  • Establish procedures for applying for waste collection services from Halton Region
