Halton offering earlier second dose appointments to more residents starting Monday

Jun 11, 2021
We are pleased to be able to offer earlier second dose appointments to more residents, based our expected vaccine supply. We continue to make great progress and have already vaccinated over 71 per cent of our 12+ community with the first dose. While we look forward to getting more residents vaccinated, our ability to open up more appointments remains dependent on supply from the Provincial and Federal governments. We have the capacity to significantly increase what we are doing now and are ready to vaccinate more people as we receive more vaccines.
— Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr
As we enter Step 1 of the Province’s plan and continue moving forward, completing second doses as soon as possible is critical for gaining protection from COVID-19 and variants of concern. I encourage everyone to get their first and second doses and support others to get vaccinated. Every resident who gets vaccinated brings us closer to getting back to normal. It’s time to roll up our sleeves Halton!

Halton offering earlier second dose appointments to more residents starting Monday

Jun 11, 2021

Residents will also be able to select mRNA vaccine (either Pfizer or Moderna) at time of booking

In alignment with Provincial direction, starting Monday, June 14, Halton residents who received their first dose of an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) vaccine before May 10 will be eligible to book an earlier second dose appointment at a Halton Region COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic through Halton’s online booking system .

“We are pleased to be able to offer earlier second dose appointments to more residents, based our expected vaccine supply,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “We continue to make great progress and have already vaccinated over 71 per cent of our 12+ community with the first dose. While we look forward to getting more residents vaccinated, our ability to open up more appointments remains dependent on supply from the Provincial and Federal governments. We have the capacity to significantly increase what we are doing now and are ready to vaccinate more people as we receive more vaccines.”

Starting Monday, June 14, eligible residents will also be able to select the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at their time of booking through Halton’s online booking system. This means that individuals who received an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as their first dose can book an appointment to receive a different mRNA vaccine for their second dose and gain their protection as soon as possible. This follows recent recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and additional guidance from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health regarding the interchangeability of mRNA vaccines. It is important that individuals complete their vaccination series; two doses will help gain full protection from COVID-19 and provide better protection against variants of concern (VOCs).

“As we enter Step 1 of the Province’s plan and continue moving forward, completing second doses as soon as possible is critical for gaining protection from COVID-19 and variants of concern,” said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region Medical Officer of Health. “I encourage everyone to get their first and second doses and support others to get vaccinated. Every resident who gets vaccinated brings us closer to getting back to normal. It’s time to roll up our sleeves Halton!”

Halton Region Public Health is reminding residents that it remains critically important for all those who have not received a first dose to get one. All individuals who are 12 years of age and older who have not yet booked their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Residents can also continue to get their first or second doses at:

Important information & instructions

  • On Monday, June 14, residents who received their first dose of an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) vaccine before May 10 will be eligible to book an earlier second dose appointment at a Halton Region COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic through Halton’s online booking system. Non-residents who received their first dose at a Halton Region clinic before May 10 will also be eligible.
  • On Monday, June 14, eligible residents will be able to select the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at their time of booking through Halton’s online booking system. This means that individuals who received an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as their first dose, can book an appointment to receive a different mRNA vaccine for their second dose. Learn more about vaccine interchangeability.
  • Appointment availability and vaccine type (Pfizer or Moderna) is dependent on supply. While residents will have the option to select or change their vaccine type, given the unpredictability of vaccine supply, we cannot guarantee that the preferred vaccine will be administered for the second dose.
  • Appointments are added to Halton Region’s online booking system as supplies are confirmed.
  • While booking online is the fastest way to schedule an appointment, residents who require booking support can also call 311. Residents who are not currently eligible to receive the vaccine are asked to avoid calling 311 or visiting the online booking system to ensure eligible residents have access.
  • Bookings for Halton residents are not available through the Provincial booking system; residents who access the Provincial booking system will be redirected back to Halton’s system.
  • Eligible residents can book appointments at any one of Halton’s seven COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics located in Burlington (including Joseph Brant Hospital), Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville (including Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital). Parking is free at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Joseph Brant Hospital for those with scheduled appointments at these clinics:
    • Vaccinations at Halton’s clinics are by appointment only (no walk-ins). Please do not contact clinics directly.
  • There are currently multiple pharmacies in Halton offering the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Appointments are booked directly with the pharmacy. To find a participating pharmacy, visit covid-19.ontario.ca/vaccine-locations.
    • Residents should cancel their appointments as soon as possible if they find earlier appointments through a pharmacy. By cancelling your appointment, this ensures that someone else who is eligible can get the vaccine.
  • Eligible residents have the option to book same-day (“last minute”) vaccine appointments through our online booking system. These appointments will become available when there are last minute cancellations at a vaccination clinic, and can only be used for first dose appointments. This option is only available to those who are currently eligible and residents must arrive at the selected clinic within 30 minutes of booking.
  • Residents are asked to attend their appointments alone if possible in order to limit the amount of individuals in our clinics and maintain adequate physical distancing. You may bring one support person, if required (for example, a caregiver or interpreter).
  • To maintain physical distancing and safety measures, please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment (not earlier) and remember to wear a non-medical mask. Please note: you will be required to bring proof of age and residency in Halton to your appointment.
