When you are behind the wheel, everything else can wait

Distracted driving continues to be a growing concern on our roads. We are working together with the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) to help keep our communities safe and remind motorists that when you are behind the wheel, put your phone away and stay focused on the road.

From March 2-13, 2020, we will be conducting another distracted driving campaign—#ItCanWaitHalton—on our roads by increasing enforcement efforts and communicating about the dangers of distracted driving.

During a similar campaign last fall, 199 motorists were charged with distracted driving. The #ItCanWaitHalton hashtag garnered 707,130 impressions over social media while roadside signs were passed by motorists more than 5 million times during the course of the campaign. We are hoping to reach even more people with the latest campaign.

It is important to get the word out that simply holding your phone or other communications device while driving is against the law—even while stopped at a traffic light. Please text before you get into your car and put your phone away while you drive. If you see someone driving distracted, report it through the HRPS’s Road Watch online reporting tool once you have safely parked.

Collisions and injuries are preventable and motorists play an important role in keeping our roads safe. For more helpful road safety and distracted driving tips, visit halton.ca or haltonpolice.ca. You can also join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #ItCanWaitHalton.

Together, the Region and the HRPS are continuing to keep Halton one of the safest communities in Canada and a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
