Training and support programs

Are you looking for a new or better job, but need some help getting prepared? Learn about the skills-training programs and workshops that Halton Region and the province of Ontario offer job seekers.

Better Jobs Ontario is a provincial program that helps Ontarians with the costs for training or education required to get a better job.

You may qualify for up to $28,000, or more in some cases, to pay for tuition and expenses such as:

  • Books
  • Living expenses
  • Help caring for dependants
  • Travel & Transportation
  • Disability supports
  • Other living and training costs

Do you qualify for Better Jobs Ontario?

You qualify for Better Jobs Ontario if you:

  • have been laid-off and have not been working or are working a temporary job just to cover costs; or
  • have not been laid-off but have been unemployed for six months or longer and are part of a low-income household.

You can also apply if you receive either:

  • Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Ontario Works (OW)
  • Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)

Applying to Better Jobs Ontario

During your application process, you will work with Employment Halton to determine if this program is right for you. If so, staff will also help you prepare and complete your application.

Each month, Employment Halton hosts workshops to assist job seekers with the fundamental skills needed to search for employment. Participants can expect assistance with cover letters and resumes, job searching, interview preparedness, job fair preparation, computer skills, and more.

First impressions count! This virtual workshop will teach you how to practice the skills needed to make a lasting impression at your next interview and how to answer challenging questions.

Better Jobs Ontario program

This virtual seminar describes the Provincial Government's Better Jobs Ontario program (formerly Second Career Program). The program supports workers who have been recently laid-off or are currently unemployed and are interested in training or skills development to find a new job in a growing industry.

Proactive job search strategies

This virtual workshop will teach you about effective job search strategies, including the hidden job market, social media, email and online job applications, networking, cold calling and informational interviews.

Targeted cover letters and resumes

Learn how to target your cover letter and resume for specific jobs in a step-by-step job application process.
