Major infrastructure improvements happening in Halton

Feb 06, 2020

As our community continues to grow, Halton Region is making investments in infrastructure and building complete communities that maintain the high quality of life that residents expect and enjoy.

I am excited to share some of the major projects happening in our community this year that are building a better Halton. These are important projects that will relieve traffic congestion and provide more safe and convenient travel options for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users.

Trafalgar Road

With almost 60,000 daily commuters, Trafalgar Road is a major corridor that residents rely on to get to work, school and services every day. In December 2019, construction began between Leighland Avenue and north of Hays Boulevard.

Here are some of the improvements the project includes:

  • widening the road from four to six lanes to improve travel time;
  • new off-road bike lanes, sidewalks, bus stops and shelters to add alternative transit options;
  • watermain infrastructure upgrades to maintain access to reliable drinking water; and
  • new stormwater infrastructure to address the impacts of climate change and protect the environment.

I am also pleased with the work being done to minimize traffic delays, avoid full road closures and prioritize safety. The contractor will be widening the road one side at a time, using trenchless (underground) technologies for water and stormwater infrastructure. An Advanced Traffic Management System will also be installed to enable real-time response to traffic demands and maximize green lights at intersections.

Construction is anticipated to be complete by December 2021.

Britannia Road

Phase one of the improvements to Britannia Road between Tremaine Road and Regional Road 25 began in September 2019. Phase one includes:

  • widening the road from two to six lanes;
  • a new overpass bridge structure at the CN Rail crossing;
  • new multi-use pathways and on-road cycling lanes;
  • new signalized intersections and street lighting; and
  • new stormwater infrastructure.

Phase two (James Snow Parkway to Highway 407) and three (Regional Road 25 to James Snow Parkway) are scheduled to start in 2020. Construction on the entire roadway is anticipated to be complete in 2023.

William Halton Parkway

Phase one of the William Halton Parkway Extension project, between Sixth Line and Ninth Line, is expected to be opened at the end of this year.

Phase two of the project, between Third Line and Sixth Line, will begin in 2020. This work will complete the new east-west corridor across north Oakville from Third Line and Ninth Line. The new roadway connection will also include:

  • new roundabouts, bridges and traffic signals;
  • new multi-use pathways, bike lanes and sidewalks; and
  • upgraded stormwater and watermain infrastructure.

Construction on the entire roadway is anticipated to be complete in 2024.
