Regional Chair Gary Carr: Stay connected on Regional improvements in your community

Jul 29, 2021

As our community grows, the Region continues to invest in infrastructure and build complete communities that maintain a high quality of life for Halton residents. We are widening roads to improve traffic flow, building new watermains to provide high-quality drinking water and making upgrades to wastewater treatment plants that help protect the environment. Through these projects and so many others, we are building a better Halton every day.

I’m pleased to share some updates on major projects happening in our community with you.

Trafalgar Road (from Leighland Avenue to north of Hays Boulevard)

We are officially in Phase 3 of the Trafalgar Road Improvements project! During this final phase of work, traffic is being diverted to the east and west sides of Trafalgar Road to facilitate work along the center of the corridor.

Here are some of the ongoing improvements:

  • widening the road from four to six lanes to improve travel time;
  • new off-road bike lanes, sidewalks, bus stops and shelters to provide safe alternative transit options;
  • new signalized intersections and street lighting;
  • watermain infrastructure upgrades to maintain access to reliable drinking water; and
  • new stormwater infrastructure to address the impacts of climate change and prevent flooding along the roadway.
Construction is anticipated to be complete by December 2021.

Britannia Road Improvements (from Tremaine Road to Highway 407)

We are also working to complete improvements to Britannia Road between Tremaine Road and Highway 407. Work began on Phase 1 (Tremaine Road to Regional Road 25) in September 2019, and work is now underway on Phase 3 (Regional Road 25 to James Snow Parkway as of June 2021. Phase 2 (James Snow Parkway to Highway 407) utility relocations have begun, with construction expected to start in August 2021. Residents can look forward to improvements including:

  • widening the road from two to six lanes;
  • two new bridges crossing Sixteen Mile Creek at the main branch and the east branch;
  • new road-over-rail grade separation west of First Line;
  • new multi-use pathways and on-road bike lanes;
  • new signalized intersections and street lighting; and
  • new trunk watermains, wastewater mains and storm sewers.
Construction is anticipated to be complete in 2024.

Work is now underway on Dundas Street, with Phase 1 focused on the area between Appleby Line and Tremaine Road. Improvements to the corridor began in June 2021 and will help keep traffic moving as the communities of north Burlington and Oakville grow. Residents and motorists can look forward to the following improvements:

  • widening the road from four to six lanes, including along Tansley Bridge;
  • new multi-use pathways, sidewalks and on-road bike lanes;
  • new bus stops and shelters;
  • new traffic signals and street lights; and
  • upgraded stormwater infrastructure.
Construction is anticipated to be complete in 2027.
