Teachers and school staff play a key role in educating students about preventable injuries. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among Canadian children. Curriculum supports, as well as supportive social and physical environments, can provide students with knowledge and skills to help them make safer choices and prevent injuries. Halton Region provides teachers/school staff with the following resources to help create safe environments for students.

  • At Home Alone Family Handbook
    A handbook for parents and children to help assess child readiness and take necessary preparations to be left home alone safely.
  • Colour Me Safe (external link) (ages 4-7)
    A colouring book designed for children ages four to seven. Throughout the book, the Safe Family takes simple steps to prevent injuries.
  • Elmer the Safety Elephant (external link)
    A community safety website with interactive games for children and educational resources for teachers.
  • SunSense program (external link)
    The SunSense program supports schools in creating a sun-safe environment and developing a SunSense policy to protect staff and students through education and awareness of sun-safe practices.

    Interactive website for parents and educators on teaching children about personal safety. Offers lesson plans for grades K-9.
  • Parachute (external link)
    A national, charitable organization dedicated to preventing injury and saving lives. Parachute's injury prevention programming and advocacy efforts help Canadians to reduce their risks of injury while enjoying long lives lived to the fullest.
  • Young Cyclist Guide (external link)
    A guide from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation with information on bicycle equipment, riding tips and the rules of the road to keep you cycling safe.

    A Teen Driver Safety Campaign that aims to prevent injury and save lives by reducing distracted, impaired and aggressive driving. High school students will be spreading the news in their schools on smart decision-making behind the wheel.
  • Safe Communities Halton Hills (external link)
    To support the establishment and implementation of a coordinated approach to addressing safety issues in the Region of North Halton through inter-agency and local community group awareness, communication, co-operation and action.
  • Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services (external link) (SAVIS)
    Organization advocating against violence in the community at large and promoting prevention through community education. Offers in-class presentations for grades 6-8.
